With varying fitting standards across the UK, Europe, and the US, ensuring your handmade lampshade fits on your lamp base or pendant light correctly can be a challenge. That’s why we’re excited to launch our NEW Universal Lampshade Conversion Kit – designed to take the guesswork out of fitting your bespoke lampshade.


This handy kit includes a collection of reducer rings that adapt our lampshade utility ring aperture to suit UK, European, US and Canadian fittings – giving you complete confidence that your lampshade will fit perfectly, wherever you are.

What’s in the Universal Lampshade Conversion Kit?

The kit includes four different types of lampshade reducer rings to convert the Euro fitting (E27) measuring 40mm (1 9/16”) on Dannells Lampshade Making Kits, Utility Rings and Frames to fit a range of lampshade holders.

NEW EURO to US Lampshade Reducer Rings

Included in the kit are our New EURO to US Lampshade Reducer Rings to fit 32mm (1 ¼ “) and 34mm (1 3/8”) diameter US lamp holders.


These are threaded screw on attachments that add width around the circumference of narrow US lamp holders, so that a lampshade with a wider Euro fitting - 40mm /1 9/16” - can be easily secured in position.


The EURO to US Lampshade Reducer Rings work by providing a bottom lip for the lampshade Euro fitting to sit on, and a second to grip it in place.

How to use  

  • Squeeze the Adapter and install into the centre of the lampshade frame to reduce the aperture.

  • Squeeze the Adapter and install into the centre of the lampshade frame to reduce the aperture.

  • Insert a Converting Washer onto the stem of the Harp System.

  • Place your lampshade onto the thread of the Harp System, ensuring the washer fits into the ridge of the Adapter.

  • Place the other Converting Washer on top of the Adapter, fit into the ridge, and then screw on your Finial.

How to use

  • Start by removing the bulb, and screwing the first ring down the lamp holder to the desired height, with the lip facing up

  • Place the lampshade over the lamp holder so it sits on the lip. Please note at this stage the lampshade will not be secure, so be sure to hold this in place.

  • With the lip facing down, screw the second ring onto the lamp holder, tightening until the lampshade is secure and does not move.

Lighting Terminology

  • Lamp holder - the section of a lamp base or ceiling pendant light to which the lampshade is attached. This can be 'threaded' or 'unthreaded' and these vary in size to accommodate different bulbs.


  • Lampshade Making Kit - a professional kit from Dannells / Needcraft from which you can make a lampshade in a wide range of shapes and sizes using your own fabric


  • Utility Ring/Frame - lampshade ring or frame which has a utility section in the centre, that connects to the light fitting and is paired with a plain ring/ frame to make a hard lampshade.


  • Euro Fitting - the unthreaded hole at the centre of a lampshade, which slots over the lamp holder, measuring 40mm /1 9/16”.


  • Fitter - US term for the part of the lamp or ceiling pendant light that holds the lampshade in place. Common types of fitters include Uno fitter, Spider fitter, Clip-on fitter and Slip fitter.


  • Harp and Finial - commonly found in the US and Canada, this is a two piece mechanism for attaching lampshade with a 'Spider' Fitter, 'American fitting' or 'US washer fitting' ring to a lamp base. The harp is attached to the lamp base below the socket and extends upwards to support the lampshade and the finial screws onto of the lampshade to secure. 


  • B22 Bayonet Cap Lamp Holder (UK) - fits a 22mm bayonet light bulb


  • E14 Edison Screw Lamp Holders (EU) - fits a 14mm screw in light bulb


  • E27 Edison Screw Lamp holders (EU) - fits a 27mm screw in light bulb


  • E26 Edison Screw Lamp Holders (US) - fits a 26mm/ 1" screw in light bulb
