Lampshade Inspiration - Different Shade Shapes

As fond as we are of the super versatile drum lampshades, that are seen everywhere from our homes to hotels to the high street, lampshades making doesn’t have to be all about circles!

Once you have the skills in your lampshade making arsenal to make a drum shade, the world is your oyster when it comes to alternative shapes of shade. Today we’re going to showcase the other shades we stock, share maker inspiration to tempt you to try a brand new lampshade shape and give you expert tips for making them.

Hexagon Lampshades

Modern and stylish our Hexagon frames and kits are a real headturner and the frames are often paired with our Metallic Stick It range to make the ultimate contemporary shade. Great for lending their shape to everything from plain fabric to geometric fabric, you have six sides to show off your choice of fabric!

Tips for making:

When attaching your frames to the Stick It PVC, makes sure your corners are nice and tight and flush to the frame. With a drum shape, this isn’t an issue, but for the Hexagon shape it’s good to make sure each corner of the hexagon frame is sitting tightly against the PVC.

Oval Lampshades

Ideal for filling a dark corner with light, our oval frames and kits give off an air of finery and remind us of opulent hotel lobbies. Available in a range of sizes – 20cm, 30cm and 40cm – add an extra touch of class by hiding the bulb behind one of our purpose made diffusers, when used as a pendant light.

Tips for making:

If you’re working with a positional print and would like to sit this at the centre front of your shade, measure and mark the centre point of the length of the PVC and the frame. Match together when position the rings on the PVC and the roll both ways.

Rounded Rectangle Lampshades

Similar to an oval shade our rounded rectangle frames and kits is the perfect vehicle for capturing a printed fabric and with some clever positioning, this can really make your lampshade shine! The corners are rounded off, so there are no sharp edges and the long length of the rectangle is the perfect canvas for a bold design

Tips for making:

Mark the centre point on one of the long edges of the your rounded rectangle frame, then using this frame as a guide, mark onto the second frame in the same place. When rolling the frame position the edge of the PVC at this mark and so the seam sits to the back of the lampshade.

Candle Clips Lampshades

Perfect for revamping wall lights or chandeliers our candle clip shades are the smallest shades in our range at just 13cm tall and 14.5cm wide in diameter. They’re ideal for wall lights or chandeliers and are a great way to pack a punch with a pop of colour or pattern. We love that @Britslovevintage has taken this a step further and added a cool pompom trim too!

For an alternative use, take a look at our DIY Festive balloon glass lights blog tutorial which we think look beautiful dotted around a home at this time of year.

Tips for making

As our candle clip shades are conical, think about the pattern on your fabric in advance of making. So for example avoid using anything with a horizontal stripes as the lines will curve upwards once the lampshade is made, meaning all over prints and patterns are the way to go for this shape of shade.
