An insider view from interior designer Susannah Acland

Providing the finishing touches

As an Interior Designer, I am always keen to provide my clients with the perfect finishing touches to their scheme.  Whichever room in their home we are working on, ambient lighting can make all the difference to the look and feel.  This is where lamps come in and what better way to personalise them, than to have a bespoke lampshade.

As well as being an Interior Designer, I am also a compulsive crafter.  I love making things! There is something particularly therapeutic about making lampshades and infinitely satisfying to see the end result.  So, when a client is keen to have one made bespoke, I jump at the chance to make it for them and my clients appreciate this additional personal service I can offer.

I also dislike waste.  So, what better way to use up the off-cuts from curtains or the excess fabric from bespoke cushions, than to make a very special lampshade.  Plus, from an aesthetic point of view, using the same fabrics as the curtains or cushions, can be a very effective way to bring harmony to a scheme, particularly in more open plan spaces, where you want to unite two separate, distinctive areas.

I have made many shapes, sizes and styles of lampshades for my interior design clients.  I started using the brilliant kits from Dannells (old name: Needcraft) whilst I was learning and then found that they were such a hit with my clients, that I invested in an enormous role of self adhesive backing, which I am gradually getting through.  This gives me the flexibility to make any height that I want.  When it comes to making an Empire shade however, I have called upon the cutting service offered by Needcraft as neither my maths nor my cutting skills are up to creating the perfect curve!

So, bespoke lampshades, the perfect finishing touch to any interior design scheme.
