#memadeshade February Winner

The nights are already lighter and there is a feeling of optimism in the air. We hope you're all feeling a little lighter and brighter too.

February's #memadeshade Instagram competition has delivered a whopping amount of entries, over 300, and as always it's great to see such a wide variety if shades using our lampshade making kits.

This month's stand out shade is certainly that and @emma_mckie_designs is our deserving winner and her £100 voucher to spend on our website, is already winging it's way to her.

Based on the west coast of Scotland Emma's designs are either screen or lino printed and we love her smart positioning of the mackrel on her winning shade, that adds wit and personality. To find out more about Emma and her shade making read this month's winner Q&A below.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and the creative things that you do?

I’m a printmaker that is drawn to pattern, colour and repetition. This is conveyed in my textile designs, I take inspiration from my love of the coast, the surrounding fishing industry and seafood it produces. I use a mix of Lino block designs and silk screens to produce my prints. I try to be as sustainable as possible and use vintage linens in my products.

Are you a newbie lampshade maker or have you made up a Needcraft Lampshade making kit before?

I was gifted a needcraft kit for Christmas and when lockdown first happened and I found it the perfect time to give it a go. I was surprised at how easy I found it, the YouTube videos are great to use and follow along to.

What do you love about the shade you entered for the #memadeshade competition?

This design is special to me as I originally designed it for my sister, her neighbour caught sight of it and wanted one and it quickly because my most popular lampshade.

What’s do you like most about the Needcraft lampshade making kits?

I love that the kits come in all different shapes and sizes allowing makers to create a whole range of shades in a matching design.

Any plans to make more lampshades?

Lampshades have quickly become my most popular item on my Etsy shop (emmamckiedesigns.etsy.com). I’m excited to give making a double sided lampshade a go. I think that just adds an extract touch of luxury. I also would love to teach a lampshade making class in the future using the workshop packs.

February's most liked shades

There is something incredibly uniform about this month's top four #mostlikedshades which follow a similar colour palette, tonal blues and greys, have natural themes that suit spring to a tee and have been made using a variety of creative techniques.

By carefully crafting each delicate flower using free machine embroidery,

@gilhooliebespokelampshades had made a very pretty and realistic shade showing off her abundance of skill and sticking with nature and staying true to her North Devon roots, @the_lightpunk likes a shade with difference and we think her choice of fabric with crashing blue waves is just the ticket! Roll on the warm weather so we can take a dip!

Specialising in sustainable textiles, @cushiedootextiles has handprinted her trio of Scottish Linen lampshades with Eco-friendly inks and we love the crisp floral designs in muted blues. Finally, @made_in_marshfield has wowed us with this beautifully coordinating double sided shade, featuring a non-directional leaf pattern, so it can be cleverly used as a pendant or table lamp shade.

Well done to all the entrants that ended up in our February's #mostliked and give them a friendly follow on Instagram.
